The hardest part of rappelling is going over the edge. That first step where one must put one’s full weight on the half-inch rope and the thin web harness is just too much for some people. There’s just something a little disconcerting about walking off the edge of a 120-foot cliff, no matter what you are connected to. Even people who have been rappelling for years say that the first step never gets a whole lot easier.
But once you get over the edge, and actually feel that the rope is holding you, rappelling is a blast.
