May eXtreme Weekend Packing List

Okay folks, here is the much-awaited info packet for the upcoming eXtreme weekend leader’s trip. I’m sorry about not having this posted earlier, but I’ve been traveling so much that this has gotten put off one too many times. Anyway, here is what you need to know if you plan to attend the eXtreme Leader’s Weekend happening May 13-15 near Seneca Rocks, WV.

First, the official meeting site for our trip is in front of Harper’s Old Country General Store, in the shadow of Seneca Rocks. You can view an interactive map of the site here.

The plan is to meet there at 2000 hrs (that’s 8pm) on Thursday, 13 May, 2004. Get there a little bit early if you would like to have supper with us in the Front Porch Restaurant.

For those of you who live in the DC area, or who are flying in from other parts of the country and would like to ride out to WV with us, we will be leaving Redland Baptist Church in Derwood, MD, no later than 1600 (4pm). If you need a ride from the airport, please call 240-372-8806 and let us know. We can help you make arrangements to get from the airport to RBC.

West Virginia in May can be quite cold, especially in the area where we will be operating, which is near the state’s highest point. So it is advisable to bring enough layers to get you through an unexpected snow flurry, just in case. Expect to get rained on. They are calling for a chance of showers all weekend. Bring good rain gear.

Normally, on these trips we sleep out without tents or sleeping bags. This trip will be a bit more laid back, as we are primarily here to teach you how to torture…er, I mean challenge your own youth group, not to make you miserable. So on this trip feel free to bring a tent and/or sleeping bag, but please make sure you can carry it in a backpack if need be. We will be hiking approximately 4 miles a day, so don’t bring the entire winnebago, if you know what I mean. Use common sense when packing. You are basically packing for a backpacking trip. Plan accordingly.

Lastly, please bring the $175 per person registration in the form of cash or check. Due to my being late at getting this stuff together (massive apologies!) I’ll have all the forms you need for you when you get to Seneca Rocks.

Our Itinerary:

Thursday 13 May

1900 – Supper at Front Porch restaurant, Seneca rocks (optional, bring $)
2000 – meet at Seneca Rocks, Harper’s General Store. Meet and greet.
2100 – head for campsite

Where in the World has Chuck Been?

If I’ve been unusually difficult to get in touch with for the last couple of months it’s because I’ve been doing an unusual amount of traveling lately.

In the last 60 days I’ve been in 8 different countries and 22 states. My cellphone coverage has been sparse, and connections to the internet few and far between. I hope this hasn’t inconvenienced too many people. I’ll be spending the next month or so closer to home, so if you need to get in touch with me, do so before 17 June, when I’ll be leaving for 11 days to help out with the Focus on the Family “Breakaway” summit youth backpacking adventure in California.
