What I Did for the Holidays

In case you’ve been trying to get in touch with Chuck and have been unsuccessful, here’s why:

A week in the life of a travel maniac:

I had a speaking engagement for a group of West Point cadets and parents in San Antonio scheduled on the 22nd. Was going to fly there from Wisconsin, but as we were leaving for Connie’s folks house on the 20th, our old Suburban broke down – dead. So we didn’t think we were going to make it up there this year. Connie was very sad. I had to change my plane tickets to fly from Baltimore instead of Minneapolis. No big deal.

On the 22nd, I left Baltimore after about 3 hours sleep, flew through detroit, then to San Antonio. I stayed there 14 hours, did my talk, sold some books, and got about 4 hours sleep. Then I flew from San Antonio to Memphis and discovered that my connection to Baltimore had been cancelled. There was an inch of ice on everything, and over 500 people had spent the night in the airport because they couldn’t get them to hotels. So there was a tremendous backlog of angry, weary, smelly travelers. Fun fun.

On the night of the 22nd I won an auction on EBAY for a new family vehicle – a 15 passenger van! It’s only a few years old and still under warranty. We figured with six kids, the Suburban was packed to the gills when we went on a road trip, and this will give us the opportunity to take passengers once again. It’s huge!

The only problem is that it was in Miami, Florida. So as I sat at the airport in Memphis, I had an idea. I went and asked that my destination be changed to Miami. It was a spur-of-the-moment thing, but they said they could get me there if I was willing to do it. I said “go for it.”
