Live Fire with Chuck Holton

july30 037 No, this isn’t the West Virginia Militia. Nor have me and my friends decided to head to Lebanon and take matters into our own hands.

This is the group of men from Life Community Church in Hilliard, Ohio, at the end of their three-day retreat here at Runamuk. We had an awesome weekend full of manly fun – Land Navigation, Fishing, Rappelling, and an awesome shoot-off. In the process, we had some great conversation and accountability time, had deep conversation around the campfire, and made some new lifelong friends.

Francis S. Collins – a Scientist shares his Faith

Francis S. Collins, M.D., Ph.D. Francis S. Collins, MD, PHD, led the International Human Genome Project. Here’s a scientist’s scientist.

Many scientific atheists have always held that as we learn more about science, we will eventually disprove God and the Bible. Some assert that we already have, and that believing in God is like believing in a teapot orbiting Mars. And the decoding of the human genome was one of the atheist’s touchpoints for disproving God.

Not so, says Dr. Collins. In his book, “The Language of God: A Scientist Presents Evidence for Belief,” Collins lays out his arguments for why science and belief can coexist in the thinking man’s mind. While still a staunch evolutionist, (which puzzles me) Collins explains how he came to believe in Jesus Christ. “…you’re not supposed to decide something is true until you’ve looked at the data. And yet I had become an atheist without ever looking at the evidence whether God exists or not.”

And when he looked at the evidence – principally by reading C.S. Lewis’ book, Mere Christianity. Says Collins, “In the very first chapter,” he said, “all my arguments about the irrationality of faith lay in ruins.”

It’s like I’ve always said – many people smarter than me have looked at Christianity and not found it lacking. If they can believe it, so can I.

Charlotte Teubner – What a Warrior!

the Guaymi“I am a soldier of Jesus Christ until I die… I don’t believe at all in retirement. I retire in heaven.”

These and other inspiring words are from Charlotte Teubner, a German missionary who has spent her life with these people, the Guaymi indians in the mountains of Panama. We interviewed her in Panama in March. Her story aired today on the 700 club. Watch it here or read the transcript.

Pensees – Blaise Pascal, 1660.

Section II – The Misery of Man without God

67. The vanity of the sciences.

Physical science will not console me for the ignorance of morality in the time of affliction. But the science of ethics will always console me for the ignorance of the physical sciences.

68. Men are never taught to be gentlemen and are taught everything else; and they never plume themselves so much on the rest of their knowledge as on knowing how to be gentlemen. They only plume themselves on knowing the one thing they do not know.

God and Country in Somerset, PA

july2 041I spoke on Sunday, July 2 at the Somerset Alliance Church in Somerset, PA. It was their annual “God and Country” service, and was well attended by church members and guests such as Congressman Bill Schuster, as well as a fantastic performance by the Somerset Community Band.

I brought the family along, and after the service we traveled out to the Flight 93 crash site - now a makeshift memorial, and very moving, even for the kids.
